Some Ontological Problems concerning Predication

چکیده

The Aristotelian double characterization of a primary substance exploits the difference between the part-whole relation and the non-linguistic relation of predication. A problem arises whether and how the second relation could be reduced to something else. Such a reduction is explicitly declared or at least implicitly assumed in all version of conceptualism and nominalism. The moderate realism is often interpreted as a reductionism of this kind but such interpretations do not seem corect. Only the so called resemblance theory can be regarded as a successful attempt at the reduction in question. However, it seems that the predication per se cannot be disposed of even in this way. If so, then the nature of the relation of predication still waits for a precise analysia and description. This would provide an insight into the essence of a universal being Received October 29, 1998 © 1998 by Nicolaus Copernicus University

The Modular Community Structure of Linguistic Predication Networks

This paper examines the structure of linguistic predications in English text. Identified by the copular “is-a” form, predications assert category membership (hypernymy) or equivalence (synonymy) between two words. Because predication expresses ontological structure, we hypothesize that networks of predications will form modular groups. To measure this, we introduce a semantically motivated meas...

Ignacio Angelelli Predication Theory: Classical Vs Modern

This essay aims, first, at describing the conflict between the theory of predication (classical, Aristotelian) prevailing in philosophy until the end of the 19th century, and the theory arisen with the new logic (modern, Fregean). Three features characterize the preFregean period: 1) conflation of predication and subordination (extensionally: membership and class-inclusion), 2) conflation of id...

A Logical Analysis of Existential Dependence and Some Other Ontological Concepts - A Comment to Some Ideas of Eugenia Ginsberg-Blaustein

This paper deals with several problems concerning notion of existential dependence and ontological notions of existence, necessity and fusion. Following some ideas of Eugenia Ginsberg-Blaustein, the notions are treated in reference to objects, in relation to the concepts of state of affairs and subject of state of affairs. It provides an axiomatic characterization of these concepts within the f...

Adjunct Roles and External Predication

0. Introduction This paper addresses one of the linking problems involving prepositional phrases (PPs) especially those involving beneficiary for, and argues that such PPs are best analyzed as adjunct PPs. In this paper I propose that external predication is more appropriate for these PPs than Wechsler's (1995) argument-annexing approach. The argument and analysis put forth in this paper assume...

Revisiting the Ontological Square

Considerations regarding predication in ordinary language as well as the ontology of relations suggest a refinement of the Ontological Square, a conceptual scheme used in many foundational ontologies and which consists of particular substrates as well as their types on the one hand and particular attributes as well as their types on the other hand. First, the distinction between particulars and...
